Remember when the internet felt new? Many of us don’t. But if you can order a drink at a bar you probably remember when building the front-end of web apps felt like trying to knock on a revolving door. Then browser-based developer tools came to market and changed the pace of front-end development. To date, extending chat apps with custom integrations has felt more similar to the early days of web apps. That changes today, with Developer Toolkit in Stride.
Meet Stride’s Developer Toolkit
Developer Toolkit is a new way to access and experiment with contextual metadata for all Stride messages right from Stride. Previously, the only way for a developer to access this metadata was to post it out to their logs in the process of debugging. Stride’s new Developer Toolkit does for team chat what Chrome did for browsers in 2008—making it easier than ever for developers to bring incredible user experience to apps in Stride, faster.
Unlike other chat vendors, Stride let’s you do all of this natively. You won’t have to jump from Stride to a browser to preview exactly how your messages will appear.
The Developer Toolkit is an optional setting intended for customers and partners looking to quickly build beautiful integrations in Stride and extend them across the Atlassian Stack. Enabling the Developer Toolkit adds two new actions on top of every message element: Message inspector and the visual Message builder.
Message inspector gives developers the ability to look into the details of any message, an indispensable tracing and troubleshooting tool.
Message builder presents a live message formatting sandbox within Stride’s desktop and browser apps. Developers looking to build custom workflows for their teams or automate tasks with in-house tools can quickly build and refine the UI of their apps right from Stride with message builder.
App developers agree
We released Developer Toolkit in beta to some of our closest app development partners last week. The feedback we received confirmed this feature will make developing apps for Stride easier than ever.

Enable Developer Toolkit
Developer Toolkit is an optional setting on Stride (version 1.21). You can find the option under the settings gear on the left-hand sidebar. Select Advanced, and check the box to enable developer toolkit.
When you’re back in your chats, click on the three dots to the right of any message, and you’ll find the two new actions to toy around with.
